punisher gunFrank Castle, army veteran, U.S. Marine, and vigilante known as The Punisher.

A force to be reckoned with Castle was a top soldier and loving family man, ultimately his years in Vietnam took a toll on his mind and body. Eventually he resigned from the army instead taking a position as  a Special Forces instructor in New York State so that he could be with his family again. Wife, Maria, and children, Lisa and Francis.

Tragedy struck while on a family picnic in Central Park, the Castle family was witness to a mob execution which  in turn caused the gunmen to turn on the family as well. Killing Maria, Lisa, and Francis, as well as gunning down Frank, who managed to survive. Heartbroken and torn apart Frank Castle was seeking justice, looking to the criminal justice system to do it work but was confronted with the fact that powerful criminals had bought the system. Corrupting it from the inside out making the deaths of his family meaningless.

Frank snapped, going AWOL and re-enlisting into an army of one entering a never-ending war against criminals in New York City. Frank Castle became The Punisher, donning a black body suit with a white death’s head symbol on his chest Punisher roams at night mercilessly killing every criminal who crosses his path.

As the Punisher he fights without care or hesitation, his body is just another tool in his arsenal.  Punisher has an incredible pain tolerance, able to take enormous amounts of pain without letting him slow down in the least. Both Tony Stark (Iron Man) and Nick Fury have commented on Castle extraordinary tolerance. Punisher’s sense are second to none as he’s been shown to shoot with tremendous accuracy at Spider-man and other speedsters. Punisher has a strict military discipline, which arguably has been his salvation after losing his family, and used his talents to master a variety of techniques and abilities in his  unending war. For example acting, disguise, piloting skills, shooting, programming/hacking, among countless other skills. Frank Castle is a man without “superpowers” but is shown as the ultimate adapter in being able to take on any foe with the same expertise and ruthlessness as is his trademark. Deadly accurate with nearly every weapon as well as stealth infiltration, camouflage, etc. a master technician. Castle has a collection of different custom technology he’s stolen or acquired through his years from villains and heroes then adapting them to himself and using them nearly immediately with precision and expertise. His distinct lack of “powers” is made up by his unfathomable command of his mind and body with a foreboding drive for perfection in everything he does.

The character originally appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #129, issue Feb. 1974, Punisher taking on the role of villain hunting Spider-man for the murder of Norman Osborn.  Eventually the character was given his own spin-off issue, with new issues being printed this year. The character gained popularity enough to garner 3 films, numerous appearances within other Marvel story lines, animated televisions shows albeit the character was toned down for a more family friendly environment.

Punisher is the epitome of vigilante justice. Taking no prisoners, attacking crime where ever it may be, and using extreme prejudice against all criminals. Not only he is driven out of vengeance,  but out of seething hatred for criminals, evil doers, the thieves and killers of the world. His rage is unmatched and like his war, never ending.
