Oct. 13 2014, Variety reported that Robert Downey Jr. is on the verge of signing a deal to play Tony Stark, Iron Man, in the upcoming “Captain America 3” which will explore the “Civil War” storyline.
Marvel Civil War was a seven issue series from 2006 to 2007, it pitted Iron Man and Captain America against one another in an all-out war. The two took sides over the “Superhero Registration Act” which forced superheroes to give up their identities to the U.S. government and act as government agents.
This is one of my all-time favorite comic series, a gritty, complex tale of friends turned enemies and lines being drawn in the sand. Tony Stark takes a change of pace and supports the government while Steve Rodgers, Captain America, fights against it. The battle causes the Marvel world to tear in two, where heroes are forced to fight one another.
Will we see Frank Castle in the new film?
Civil War takes many different and wild turns throughout the series, each issue offering more and more twists. Early on Iron Man convinces Spiderman to reveal his identity to the world as Peter Parker. After a series of escalating violence and secret government projects revealed by none other than The Punisher, Spiderman decides to switch sides and fight against Iron Man and the pro-registrations. A fight ensues where Spiderman is wounded and barely escapes into the sewer only to be saved by The Punisher who brings him to Captain America and the Secret Avengers.
Spiderman plays a very pivotal role in the Civil War storyline and should be included in the film, just like The Punisher. Not only saving Spiderman but providing vital information to the Secret Avengers. The Punisher is one of the darkest heroes, killing criminals rather than sending them to prison, the entire Civil War storyline is darker and bloodier than the current Marvel line of films.
If Marvel is going to do Civil War any kind of justice Joss Whedon’s Avengers are going to get a lot darker a lot faster. Any hopefully this will bring The Punisher back, even in a small way to the big screen fighting alongside Captain America.
